How to Handle the Main Boss Encounters
Tenebris Somnia does not win boss fights with raw damage; each major encounter is a mechanical test. Obscuratus requires you to extinguish candles to reveal him, Fumus turns your own equipment against you if you step on his red circles, grapples from Vitria and the Relicta ghosts must be broken by mashing the interact button, Sanguis in beast form must be impaled on the giant knife, and the Sulfur statue arenas can be reset by destroying the glowing studio lights. The sections below break down what to do before and during each fight.
Before You Start
- Set the interact button to something comfortable to mash repeatedly; grapples demand fast, repeated presses.
- Carry a melee weapon you can swing at environmental objects, not just enemies.
- Keep a firearm available for shooting lights or switches, but remember Fumus punishes you for holding any weapon near his red circles.
- Top off healing items before entering any arena, since several fights lock you in until the mechanic is solved.
Obscuratus: The Candle Fight
Obscuratus begins the fight completely invisible. You cannot trade blows with him while he is hidden, so your first priority is the environment rather than the boss.
- Run around the arena and interact with every lit candle you can find.
- Extinguish all of them to strip away his invisibility and expose him.
- Deal as much damage as you can while he is revealed.
- Expect him to vanish again. Repeat the candle routine each time it happens.
You will cycle through this pattern several times before his health is depleted, so do not waste resources trying to attack an invisible target. Watch the floorspace for candle positions so you can reach them faster on later cycles.
Fumus: Managing the Red Circles
Fumus spawns red circles on the ground that react to whatever is in your hands. The consequences depend on the weapon state:
| What You Are Holding | Result of Stepping on a Circle |
|---|---|
| Loaded firearm | You turn the gun on yourself and die instantly. |
| Melee weapon | You strike yourself in the head and take damage. |
| Unloaded firearm | No lethal outcome, but you are locked into a long animation of trying to fire. |
| Nothing equipped | The circle vanishes on contact. |
The most efficient tactic is to unequip everything and sprint through the circles. Each one you touch while empty-handed disappears permanently, which permanently thins out the hazard layout. Clearing circles early makes the rest of the fight far more manageable.
Breaking Grapples
Both standard enemies and bosses can grab you and lock you into a grapple state. Vitria can snare Julia by the throat and drag her in until she is within instant-kill range, and Relicta ghosts latch on and drain life for as long as they hold you. Mash the interact button rapidly the moment the grab connects. Doing so frees you and returns full control of movement.
Sanguis: The Beast Form
You cannot simply out-damage the beast form. A giant knife sits near the end of the chase sequence, and it is the only reliable kill condition.
- Lure Sanguis toward the knife during the chase.
- Either bait his pounce so it lands him over the blade, or maneuver so he stands directly on top of it.
- When the knife stabs through him, the fight ends and the next area opens.
Sulfur Statues and the Studio Lights
Glowing studio lights ring each Sulfur statue arena. If the pressure builds or the Sulfur statue is being overrun by summoned enemies, break one of the lights.
- Shoot the light or strike it with a melee weapon.
- Breaking it instantly kills every enemy currently on screen.
Whenever you see a studio light anywhere in the game, treat it as an interactable you can destroy. They function as panic buttons during these fights.
