To unlock ECU tuning in Limp Mode, obtain the matching one-use unlock USB stick for each locked feature: Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, Pops & Bangs, and Launch Control. Use the stick in the ECU software tool; its license then remains available in that tool. If the ECU is already bricked with code U0100, recover it by writing a valid flash for the engine currently fitted, using only features for which the tool has a license.
How ECU tuning unlocks work
Each stage and each optional feature has its own license. A Stage 1 stick does not unlock Stage 2 or Stage 3, and an unlock for Pops & Bangs or Launch Control is separate. Unlock sticks are consumed when used, so do not spend one casually. They are rare and may be found with traders or obtained through a trade.
- Stage 1: requires the Stage 1 unlock stick.
- Stage 2: requires the Stage 2 unlock stick.
- Stage 3: requires the Stage 3 unlock stick.
- Pops & Bangs: requires its own unlock stick.
- Launch Control: requires its own unlock stick.
The following options are available without an unlock stick: STOCK, Pops & Bangs OFF, Launch Control OFF, a raised rev limit, limiter-cut adjustment, the Vmax limiter setting, and fault-code disabling.
Safe ECU flash procedure
- Connect the ECU software tool and select READ with the ignition on and the engine off.
- Edit the file only after confirming that it matches the engine fitted to the car.
- Before writing, check that every enabled Stage, Pops & Bangs setting, and Launch Control setting has a license in the tool.
- Select WRITE with the ignition on. Allow at least 10 seconds for the write to complete; the engine must not be running because a running engine stops during this process.
Avoiding a destroyed ECU
Never write a tune that requires a license you do not have. This warning also applies when reading a car that already has a tune: its file may contain a locked Stage or optional feature. Before writing that file to the ECU, change it to STOCK, set Pops & Bangs to OFF, and set Launch Control to OFF unless the corresponding licenses are present.
An ECU can be destroyed by a flash for the wrong engine, a flash when no engine is fitted, an unknown file, or an interrupted write. Enabling Stage, Pops & Bangs, or Launch Control without its license has the same result. The symptom is an engine that cranks but does not start, with code U0100.
Recovering from U0100
Do not keep rewriting the problematic file or attempt to hide the code. In the ECU software tool, prepare a known valid flash that matches the installed engine and uses no unlicensed feature. A stock configuration is the safest recovery choice: select STOCK, Pops & Bangs OFF, and Launch Control OFF, then write it with the normal ignition-on, engine-off procedure. The source specifies this valid matching flash as the fix; it does not provide a separate repair part or additional recovery command.
Using fault-code disabling safely
Disabling fault codes is also free, but it should not be used to conceal a genuine mechanical problem. For example, if a removed catalytic converter, DPF, or diesel EGR is intentionally absent, its related code can be disabled. A part removed without disabling its code causes permanent limp mode. For ECU reliability, keep the flash licensed and use code disabling only for parts deliberately removed, not as a substitute for repairing a fault.
