Limp Mode co-op supports up to four players, including the host, through Steam friends-only multiplayer. The host owns the world and its save, so start or load the story world from the host's main menu, open the co-op gate, and invite friends through the Steam overlay. Everyone must be running the same game version, and guests should return to the main menu before joining if they are already playing.
Before you start
- All players need the same version of Limp Mode. If the game reports that versions differ, update the game in Steam.
- Co-op uses Steam and friends invitations. There is no public server list.
- The host's computer controls the world and its save. Progress is not saved while the host is offline.
How to host a co-op world
- From the main menu, choose
Story, then selectContinueorNew world. - Press
Escand selectCoop gateuntil its status saysopen. The world continues running when you change this setting. - Choose
Invite friendsin the Esc menu. Steam's overlay opens so you can select the friends to invite.
The gate state is saved with the world and opens again when the host loads that world. To close the gate, first remove guests through Esc > Players > Kick. A kicked player can join again; banning is the option that keeps a player out.
How to join a friend
Accept the Steam overlay invitation, or select Join game on the host in your Steam friends list. If you are currently inside another game, return to the main menu before joining. The host does not have to approve the connection after the invitation or join request is made.
Characters, inventory, and money
| Item or progress | How it works in co-op |
|---|---|
| Character | Your skills, class, appearance, and voice belong to you and are available in every world. |
| Bank account | Your bank account travels with your character between worlds. |
| Bag | Your inventory and cash are stored in the host's world. They return when you revisit that world but do not transfer to other worlds. |
| First visit | You receive one starter bag containing a bandage, baseball bat, snack bar, water bottle, and toolbox. |
You can bring exactly one of your own cars into a friend's world. The car must be in your garage and can be called in at a registration office or phone booth for a small cash fee. Calling in a second car swaps the cars. When you leave, your car returns to your garage after passengers are dropped off. Some actions, such as buying a house, are restricted to the host.
Saving and sleeping
Only the host saves the co-op world. To save, sleep in a bed, or sleep in a car when tired. Everyone must be at the bed or seated in a car for the sleep action, and the host pays for the room. If the host quits, guests are returned to the main menu, so sleep regularly to reduce lost progress.
Driving, repairs, and player distance
- All players can drive, ride in, and repair any car.
- Towing works in co-op, and any player can attach or detach the tow bar.
- The driver can use the OBD reader only while the car is stationary. A passenger can read the codes while the car is moving.
- Stay near the host. Players receive a warning when they drift too far, with an approximate limit of 850 metres behind and 350 metres ahead of the host.
- The Esc menu does not pause the game during co-op.
Voice chat
Proximity voice is directional: it is at full volume up to about 5 metres and fades out by about 100 metres. Players in the same car can always hear one another at full volume. There is no text chat.
Open Settings > Voice chat to choose Always on, Push to talk, or Switch to talk. Push to talk uses B by default: hold it to speak, or press it to toggle the microphone when using Switch to talk. A microphone icon indicates when you are transmitting. Gamepads do not have a talk button, so choose Always on if you need an open microphone. The same settings include voice volume, open-mic threshold, input level, microphone selection, and microphone boost. The phone's Voice app can mute another player and change microphone settings or mic mode. You can listen without having a microphone.
If a player is downed
Players do not die. A downed player remains incapacitated until a teammate uses an Adrenaline syringe. If the whole group is down, everyone wakes at the last bed several hours later. Each player's bag remains at the knockdown location as a loot sack, which can be recovered afterward. On waking, a player has 20 seconds of protection, or loses that protection immediately when attacking.
What to collect for a multiplayer problem
Both the host and the affected guest should enable Settings > GAMEPLAY > Write log files (for bug reports) before reproducing the problem. Guest log lines appear in the host's log only when logging is enabled for the host as well. After the issue occurs, open Steam, right-click LIMP MODE, choose Manage > Browse local files, and open the logs folder. Provide the newest limp-log_....txt from both players, plus a matching-time blackbox_....txt file if one exists.
