To build in Enshrouded, craft a Construction Hammer and place it on your hotbar. Use the hotbar key for the hammer, then press Tab to enter building mode. This opens the voxel construction interface, where you can select materials, change block shapes and sizes, and place or remove blocks. The game uses a voxel building system: every square in the world can be manipulated, and each filled square consumes one block. That means even a stack of 100 rough wood blocks may only cover about two walls, so gather far more material than the final structure appears to need.
Building Controls and Hotkeys
Once you are in building mode, the controls below let you place, remove, adjust, and undo construction actions.
| Input | Action |
|---|---|
| Left Mouse Button | Places blocks or objects. |
| Right Mouse Button | Removes blocks or objects. |
Ctrl + Middle Scroll Up/Down | Cycles material styles and adjusts block size. Use this to increase or decrease the size of the blocks you are placing. |
Q + Middle Scroll Up/Down | Shifts the placement position forward or backward. |
X | Toggles automatic snapping of blocks to the terrain. Snapping helps align blocks precisely and create seamless structures. |
Y | Undoes the assembly action. It can cancel several recent building actions. |
` or ~ | Switches between different material categories. |
The same key hints are displayed in the bottom-right corner of the screen during building mode, so you can check them there if you forget a binding.

Construction Tips
- For tall structures, craft and use scaffolding. It is made at the workbench from ordinary wood, and pieces can be placed on top of each other to reach higher areas safely.
- Use the
Xsnap tool to align walls, floors, and roofs. Snapping is especially useful for keeping large builds straight and connected. - Because Enshrouded is voxel-based, sometimes turning snapping off gives you more control for custom layouts. Experiment with both modes depending on the shape you want.
- You can build underground. Many players use this for hobbit-style homes, and circular doors and windows were added in an update, so underground builds can still feel open and decorated.
- Floating islands are possible. Start building from the ground with earth blocks, then remove the unnecessary lower blocks to leave the desired surface suspended.
- You can also dig out a whole hill and keep only the surface you want for building, rather than constructing from the ground up.
- Remember that every filled voxel costs a block. Plan large walls and floors carefully, and keep a generous stock of the relevant material before starting.
