If the view stutters when many vehicle or town icons are visible, test the icon overlay before changing several graphics settings at once. This is a reversible diagnostic step, not a guaranteed FPS fix.
Test one HUD category at a time
- Load the affected save and note the camera view where the slowdown is easy to repeat. Keep the scene and simulation conditions as similar as possible for each comparison.
- Open the overlays or Layers menu at the upper-left of the game view. Select HUD Filters, the bottom option in that menu.
- Turn off road-vehicle icons first if a busy road network is in view. Return to the same camera position and compare smoothness. If needed, repeat with town or other vehicle icon categories one at a time.
- Restore any filter that makes no useful difference. Hiding an icon changes the overlay, not the vehicle or transport line itself.
How to read the result
Players have reported that hiding vehicle or town icons reduced stutter on their own systems. The developer has acknowledged that icon volume can affect performance and identifies the overlays menu as the way to reduce it. The size of any improvement depends on the save, hardware, visible icons and game build; a player's FPS number is not a prediction for another PC.
If the comparison does not change the problem, undo the filter and investigate other causes rather than assuming every slowdown comes from HUD icons. Test again after a game update because the rendering path can change.
Stable and preview builds
The official PC notes list Steam stable build 40408. Preview build 40417 includes an improvement to FPS stability when town and vehicle HUD icons are displayed under certain conditions; 40420 is the later preview build listed in the notes. A preview fix should not be described as already shipped to stable, and it is not a universal performance guarantee.
Quick questions
Where is the switch?
Open the upper-left overlays/Layers menu and use its bottom HUD Filters option. The labels may vary with interface language.
Will this remove vehicles?
No. The developer describes this control as disabling displayed icons. Re-enable the filter to bring the icons back.
Is the preview update required?
No. The overlay check is available as a way to reduce icons on the stable branch; the later preview update changes the rendering behavior under some conditions. Compare the exact build shown in your installation before judging the result.
