To change your pebbles or your odometer reading in Over the Hill, close the game, open your save file at Documents\My games\over the hill\Saves\Player1.json in a text editor, and use Ctrl+F to find the exact number you saw in-game. Replace that number with the value you want, save the file, then relaunch the game to check the result. Because you are editing a JSON save directly, make a backup copy of Player1.json in a separate folder first, so you can restore it if anything goes wrong. Both the pebble count and the mileage edits follow the same search-and-replace routine, so the only differences are which number you record before closing the game and which field you locate afterward.
Before You Edit
You need a plain text editor that can open and save JSON files, and you need to note the current values while the game is still running. The save file is a JSON document, so its values appear as numbers assigned to keys. Changing a number is safe as long as you keep the surrounding punctuation and quotation marks intact. Do not add or remove commas, braces, or brackets, and do not rename any keys. If the file becomes malformed, the game may ignore the save or fail to load it, which is why the backup copy matters.
Locating the Save File
- Open your
Documentsfolder. - Find the
My gamesfolder inside it. - Open the
over the hillfolder. - Open
Saves. - Locate
Player1.json. This is your save.
Copy Player1.json to a separate folder before editing. Keep that copy until you have confirmed the edited save works correctly in-game.
Editing Pebbles
- While playing, note the exact number of pebbles you currently have.
- Close the game completely.
- Open
Player1.jsonin your text editor. - Press Ctrl+F and search for the number you noted.
- Replace that number with the amount you want.
- Save the file.
- Launch the game and confirm the new pebble count.
The currency entry in the save looks approximately like this:
{"ItemId":1608550983,"IsNew":true,"Count":3426}In this structure, the number after "Count": is the amount you edit. Change only that value, leaving "ItemId", "IsNew", the quotation marks, and the braces exactly as they are.
Editing the Odometer and Liveries
The odometer uses the same approach. Record the mileage shown in-game, close the game, open Player1.json, and search for that same number with Ctrl+F. Once you find it, add to the existing mileage rather than replacing it with an unrelated figure, so the value stays consistent with the vehicle's current state. For most cars, adding roughly 200 km is enough to produce a meaningful increase. Save the file, then start the game and verify the reading. Because liveries and mileage are tied to vehicle data in the same save, confirm that your vehicles still appear correctly after the edit; if anything looks wrong, restore the backup and try a smaller change.

Important Cautions
- Always close the game before editing the save, or the running game may overwrite your changes.
- Keep the JSON structure valid: no missing commas, no extra brackets, no changed key names.
- If a searched number appears in several places, check the surrounding text to make sure you are editing the intended field.
- If the game does not load the edited save, replace it with your backup and start again with a smaller change.
