When Steam Cloud is switched on for Enshrouded, the game no longer scans the local save directory. Instead it asks the Steam API which files are currently synced to the cloud, so a shared world dropped into the cloud folder stays invisible until those filenames are also listed in Steam's cache manifest. The fix is to copy the shared world files into the cloud save folder, then hand-edit remotecache.vdf so that every copied file has its own entry, with an empty sha value and all three time fields set to the current Unix epoch time. Restarting Steam afterwards pushes the newly registered files up, and the world becomes selectable in-game.

Before You Edit Anything

  • Make a backup of both save folders, or at least copy them somewhere you can restore from.
  • Have a plain text editor ready — Notepad, VS Code, vim, anything that writes plain text.
  • Know which setup you are moving the world between: local-only saves, Steam Cloud saves, or another player's files.

These steps also cover the reverse direction, moving a local save up into Steam Cloud, and passing a world to or from another person.

Where the Saves Live

Save typeWindows pathLinux path
OfflineC:\Users\{your Windows username}\Saved Games\Enshrouded~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1203620/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/Enshrouded
Steam CloudC:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\{your_steam_id}\1203620\remote\~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/{your_steam_id}/1203620/remote/

Installations in non-default locations shift these paths accordingly. The manifest file remotecache.vdf sits beside the remote directory, not inside it.

Reading the File Names

Characters are kept in a characters file. A world is a group of three kinds of files: the world data itself, a world info file, and an index file, each carrying a hash that identifies which world slot it belongs to.

Extra copies carry a numeric suffix, so slot 2 might contain 3bd85c7d-1, 3bd85c7d-2, 3bd85c7d_info-1, 3bd85c7d_info-2 and similar names. The game avoids overwriting a single file by writing new autosave copies beside the old ones, then pointing at the newest through the -index file, which stores both the active copy number and a timestamp such as {
