For weak PC performance in Limp Mode, choose the Ultra Low preset for integrated graphics or a laptop with very little graphics memory, or choose Low for an older dedicated graphics card. Then lower Render resolution to about 70–80%, set Lighting and Shadows to their lowest settings, reduce Shadow distance to around 50 m, and turn Pedestrians off if the processor is weak. If the game is using an onboard GPU or has renderer-related problems, select Graphics renderer > Lite and restart.

Apply the biggest performance changes first

  1. Open Settings > Video and select Graphics preset.
  2. Use Ultra Low or Low according to your hardware.
  3. Set Render resolution between 70% and 80%. This renders fewer pixels and is usually the least expensive way to gain frame rate, but the image becomes softer because it is scaled up with simple bilinear upscaling.
  4. Set Lighting to Low. Lighting is the largest individual graphics cost in the game.
  5. Set Shadows to Low or Off, then lower Shadow distance. The slider ranges from 10 to 200 m; approximately 50 m is a useful low setting.
  6. Turn Pedestrians off when the CPU, rather than the graphics card, is the limitation.

The presets do not change render resolution, shadow distance, the renderer, or window options. Changing one setting can therefore make the preset display Custom.

Renderer and texture-memory settings

Full is the default renderer and supports all effects. Lite is intended for onboard graphics and older cards and requires a restart after changing it. On Lite, Lighting, Volumetric haze, and TAA are unavailable. Other saved values remain available when you return to Full, while shadows, glow, FXAA, surface detail, textures, and shadow distance still work on Lite.

If the graphics card has little video memory, set Texture quality to Low or Ultra Low and restart. The Ultra Low preset uses very small textures, disables shadows, and may cause short stutters when arriving at towns or locations because they are not kept loaded in advance.

Additional frame-rate controls

  • Set Frame rate limit to a value from 20 to 1000 instead of 0 (unlimited). A lower cap can keep a laptop cooler and quieter.
  • V-Sync limits the frame rate to the monitor refresh rate and prevents tearing. Turning it off can allow more frames, but tearing may appear.
  • Keep Volumetric haze off; it is expensive and is already off in the listed presets.
  • Reduce Tire marks if graphics memory is tight. A value of 0 disables them, and higher values retain more kilometres of marks.

There are no separate view-distance or grass-density controls. Shadow distance is separate and can be reduced manually, while overall view distance is determined by the fog used in each area. If the game crashes or will not start, use the separate crash or startup troubleshooting guide before adjusting performance settings.
